If you’d like to try having a smoothie for breakfast, or even just as a good pick-me-up, here’s an all-purpose recipe you can use.

Mix And Match Smoothies

12 ounces of water or juice

6 ounces of yogurt, flavor of your choice

1 scoop of whey protein powder

1/2 cup of fruit (fresh, canned or frozen)

6 ice cubes

1. Pour liquid into a blender.

2. Add the yogurt and protein powder. You can use whatever flavor protein powder you like. The most popular flavors available are vanilla, strawberry and chocolate.

3. Blend the liquid, yogurt and protein powder until smooth.

4. Add the fruit and blend for another 30 seconds or so, depending on how pureed you like the fruit.

5. Add the ice cubes and blend on high until smooth.

NOTES: If you use canned fruit, drain it and use the juice as part of the 12 ounces of liquid.

Of course, you could also use milk for the liquid, but it really isn’t necessary with the yogurt and whey powder.

However, if you don’t like yogurt, you could leave it out and use 2 scoops of whey powder, or a packet of some kind of protein powder mix.

Experiment to your heart’s content, and find a combination you like.

And there you have it, a quick and easy recipe for smoothies you can enjoy for breakfast.

If you’re skipping breakfast, I doubt I need to tell you that’s bad. You can hear from all kinds of sources that it’s important to eat a good breakfast. So what’s keeping you from doing it? Time? Stuck in a rut?

Well, whatever your problem is, shake up your world a little and try to eat something tasty and good for you in the morning. It doesn’t have to take a lot of time and it can make a big difference in how you feel the rest of the day.

What’s NOT A Healthy Breakfast

If you’re snarfing down lattes and donuts, come on, I really don’t have to say it do I? You know that’s not a healthy breakfast. Neither is a bowl full of sugar-laden cereal, a piece of toast and a cup of coffee, granola bars that are nothing more than glorified candy bars. . . you get the idea.

Don’t let advertisements fool you. Look for “whole” foods. Whole grains, proteins, food that will put some high quality fuel in your body.

So, Just What Is A Healthy Breakfast?

Think of the word “breakfast” – you are breaking a fast. You haven’t eaten for 8 hours or more. You need something to fuel your body and jumpstart your day. Lots of carbs might make you feel alert for a little while, but if that’s all you’re eating, you’re gonna crash.

What you need in the mix is some PROTEIN. It doesn’t matter what kind – eggs, whey powder in a fruit smoothie, nuts in your oatmeal, whatever! Just make sure to get some protein in your breakfast.

Examples of A Healthy Breakfast

If you need some ideas for a good breakfast, how about some of these?

Nutrition Shakes (made with fruit and some kind of protein powder like whey)

Eggs fixed to your tastes (not swimming in grease however!)

Oatmeal with 1 egg as a side, or Power Oatmeal

Muesli or Granola made with oats, nuts, and other ingredients, but NOT totally loaded with sugar!

Whole grain pancakes or waffles topped with fruit or yogurt

What Is a Healthy Breakfast?
Think Outside Of The Box Sometimes!

Just because it’s breakfast, you don’t have to eat traditional breakfast food. If you have some leftovers that look good, go for it! (I won’t mention how often my teenage boys ate pizza for breakfast. . .) Just try to eat something that has protein and whole grains, instead of sugar and refined white flour.

If routine works for you, pick a good breakfast food like Power Oatmeal, and fix it every day.
If you need something speedy, try a nutrition shake or oatmeal in a slow cooker.
Even scrambled eggs and whole wheat toast are fast to fix.

Just find something that works for you, and make sure you eat a healthy breakfast!

Actually, this seems like a no-brainer to me, but the article is talking about the cholesterol issue, and why even though eggs have cholesterol, they’re still better to eat than Pop Tarts. I found it kind of interesting, and thought some of you might also….

2 Eggs or a Pop Tart?

by James B. LaValle

An egg has approximately 200 mg of cholesterol, and frying or scrambling it can up the cholesterol to approximately 245 mg. According to Kellogg’s, a Blueberry Pop Tart contains no cholesterol, but it does have 39.8 g of carbohydrates – almost half of them from pure sugar. So which is a healthier breakfast – an egg or a Pop Tart?

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute says you should eat less than 200 mg of dietary cholesterol each day. That’s because “cholesterol is one of the major risk factors for heart disease.” Not to mention “the higher your blood cholesterol level, the greater your risk for developing heart disease or having a heart attack.” So if the egg breakfast has more cholesterol, you might think it’s the wrong choice. But you’d be wrong. The egg breakfast wins out over the Pop Tart.

You see, it’s not the amount of cholesterol you have in your blood that puts you at risk, but the form in which it’s found. Processed foods that are high in sugar can contribute to inflammation and increase the volume of free radical byproducts from metabolism. This can end up increasing the amount of blood cholesterol found in its “oxidized” form, the form your body can’t use to build cells and create sex hormones. It’s “oxidized” cholesterol that’s deposited on the walls of your blood vessels and increases your risk of a heart attack.

It may be counterintuitive. But eating a food that’s a little higher in dietary cholesterol but doesn’t spike your blood sugar levels and create inflammation is sometimes actually healthier, even if you have “high cholesterol.”

[Ed. Note: James B. LaValle, RPh, ND, CCN, is founder of the LaValle Metabolic Institute, a nationally recognized expert on natural therapies, and the author of 13 books on healthy lifestyles and integrative care, including Cracking the Metabolic Code.
