It is true that salmon is full of omega-3 fatty acids – at least some salmon. It is also true that omega-3 fatty acids can be a very healthy addition to your diet. But it isn’t true that just because it is salmon it is good for you. In fact, if you buy your salmon at a regular supermarket, there is a good chance that it isn’t one of the healthy ones.

Why is it not healthy to eat some salmon? Because much of what is sold in supermarkets and served in restaurants is actually farmed salmon. Studies show that farmed salmon have 60% to 70% less omega-3 fatty acids. They also contain much higher levels of cancer causing dioxins and PCBs. They also contain antibiotic residue – more than meat or any other domestic animal products.

These farmed salmon are simply not very good for you. They are hatched in plastic trays, crowded in unsanitary cages underwater, unnaturally fattened using soybean pellets, and treated with antibiotics and pesticides. They have to be fed a synthetic pigment to give them their pink color. This pigment contains canthaxanthin, which was used in sunless tanning pills until they were banned for human use.

These fish aren’t just bad for your health, however. They are also bad for the environment. The antibiotics used are creating new varieties of resistant bacteria that are killing other fish in the oceans. The pesticides used are killing shellfish and other bottom-dwelling ocean life.

Finding Healthy Salmon

Okay, so you decide that you don’t want to hurt your body and the environment. How do you avoid the unhealthy fish and eat only the healthy Salmon? Try natural food markets. The label should indicate if they are wild salmon. Ask if you aren’t sure. In restaurants you’ll have to ask the waiter or chef, although the more expensive restaurants will normally serve wild-caught salmon, because in addition to being healthier, they also taste better. Some canned salmon are clearly labeled as “wild caught.”

The fish farming industry claims that they are providing a healthy fish, and that fish farming helps to protect the wild salmon population from over-fishing. Essentially they are saying that their fish are good for you and good for the environment. Both of these assertions are lies.

This writer thinks organic coffee is the best thing going, and has many good reasons for this opinion:

——————————————————————–

Here’s a quick rundown of what organic is, and why it’s better to consume organic coffee.

1) Synthetic fertilizers can’t be used to raise certified organic foods.

2) Organic certified products can’t use genetically engineered crops or animals.

3) Foods labeled 100% organic can only contain certified organic ingredients, except for water and salt.

4) Foods labeled “organic” must consist of at least 95 percent organically produced ingredients (excluding water and salt). Any remaining product ingredients must consist of non agricultural ingredients approved on the National List including non-organically produced agricultural items that are not commercially available in organic form.

5) The USDA organic logo can be displayed on any 100% organic or “Organic” item.

6) Food products labeled organic, such as organic coffee, must not be treated with sewage sludge (yes modern crops are), or ionizing radiation.

What we’ve gone through is just a quick rundown of the USDA organic labeling requirements. It’s time to talk about my passion, organic coffee. Considering that coffee usually only contains “coffee”, organic coffee blends are almost certainly 100% organic, if they are only 95% the other 5% of the components must be printed on the product information panel.

Who cares if your coffee is grown organically?

1) Regardless of what you feel about traditional farming practices, can anyone imagine slugging down something treated with sewage sludge?

2) In the US, genetically mangled crops don’t have to be labeled as such, so the only way to know if your coffee was not genetically modified is to purchase certified organic coffee.

3) For you decaf. drinkers, organic coffee is your best friend. Regular coffees use nasty substances like methylene chloride and ethyl acetate to decaffeinate the beans. Certified organic decaffeinated coffees are decaffeinated by a water process. There is epidemiological evidence to suggest that drinking conventional decaffeinated coffees is associated with an increased risk of rheumatoid arthritis.

4) Pesticides are not good for the farmers. Coffee is grown in primarily poor places in the world, and many farmers are unable to read herbicide and pesticide warning labels, resulting in erroneous preparation of chemicals, and therefore, toxic exposure for them and the environment.

What we’ve just gone through are just a few points to only drink organic coffee. It goes way beyond the coffee itself. A lot of toxins are released in the manufacturing of non-organic chemicals.

In conclusion, one must take into consideration the complete love and attention that comes from growing coffee organically. The farmers investigate and baby their crops, resulting in perfectly developed coffee beans. Whether you think I’m just trying to put forth my agenda, or promote your good health, please give organic coffee a taste and pass the word.

By now you’re probably wondering, “where can I get this delicious Organic Coffee you speak of?” We’ll it just so happens that I own Nectar of Life Organic Coffee Company, so click that link and head on over!

——————————————————————–

Of course they’re a little biased since they sell organic coffee, but it’s worth a look.
